Active Building Centre seeks to revolutionise the way the UK designs, constructs and operates buildings. They plan to do this by focusing on the potential for the integration of innovative renewable energy generation and storage technologies, coupled with state-of-the-art digital design.
The Active Building Centre has many aims that they plan to fulfil. One of their objectives is to deliver a pipeline of Active Building demonstrators and projects. Their other goal, according to Active Building Centre – “is to prove the case for national adoption of Active Buildings, which has the potential to substantially reduce both the operational costs of buildings and their demand on the UK energy infrastructure.”
Some who are unfamiliar with Active Buildings may like to know that the Buildings Centre integrates renewable energy technologies for heat, power and transport. This is so refreshing, and countries around the world need to integrate more renewable energy within their economies, as we cannot rely on non-renewable energy forever.
Active Buildings are designed to be energy efficient, with numerous ways of controlling and releasing energy. These buildings have the potential to be energy self-sufficient and, when connected with other Active Buildings in a network, could have the ability to trade energy.
The Active Building Centre Swansea truly has a beautiful vision, as mentioned above, they hope to improve the UK construction and energy sectors through the deployment of Active Buildings contributing to more efficient energy use and decarbonisation. With many of the world’s energy and resources becoming more scarce as the years progress, this is an excellent contribution from the Active Building Centre.
According to Active Buildings, they believe they can produce and store enough renewable energy to meet their own needs or more. So, the plan is to deliver a pipeline that proves the case for these innovative Active Buildings, which are more sustainable, perform better, and could significantly contribute to UK decarbonisation.
Unfortunately, as with all plans comes challenges. But the following report is hopeful, and the UK Government is committing to ambitious targets for the UK to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Active Building Centre is funded through the Transforming Construction Challenge. Still, they believe there is serious potential which will hopefully lead to substantially reduce both the operational costs of buildings and their demand on the UK energy infrastructure.
The Active Building Centre’s mission is – ‘to create an independent national centre that convenes industry, academia and government to enable the deployment of Active Buildings.’
They are also interested in connecting with like-minded partners who want to push the envelope in terms of building performance. Including supporting the more extensive energy infrastructure and transport in a meaningfully sustainable way, and also reducing carbon emissions, by using buildings to support the broader energy infrastructure.
